Die gesamtgesellschaftlichen Bedingungen sind noch entscheidender für die Entstehung und Aufrechterhaltung des neurotischen Verhaltens. F. Perls schreibt in „Grundlagen der Gestalttherapie“: „Eine Gesellschaft, die eine große Anzahl von kranken Individuen enthält, muss eine neurotische Gesellschaft sein; und von den Individuen, die in einer kranken Gesellschaft leben, müssen viele neurotisch sein“ (Perls, Grundlagen der Gestalttherapie, S. 44). Zwar wird in der Gestalttherapie der Blick auf die Wechselbeziehung zwischen Individuum und seiner Umwelt gerichtet (Kontaktprozess),weil ja das Individuum nur in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Umwelt seine Bedürfnisse befriedigen kann, aber die meisten Gestalttherapeuten berücksichtigen nur das unmittelbare Umfeld (Familie, berufliches Umfeld, Bekannte und Freunde usw.) des Individuums und nicht die Einbettung dieses Umfeldes in die Gesellschaft. Es sind aber die gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen, die das unmittelbare Umfeld des Individuums prägen. Das Individuum wird additionally in seinem Umfeld immer auch mit den Erwartungen der Gesellschaft konfrontiert. Die Frage ist additionally, wie die gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen die Entstehung des neurotischen Verhaltens mit verursachen.
Wenn wir quick alle mehr oder weniger neurotisch sind, dann sind wir mehr oder weniger auch uns selbst entfremdet. Wir sind in unserem Verhalten nicht mehr echt und haben den Kontakt zu unserem authentischen Selbst verloren. Wir sind zur Fassade geworden.
Das Schichtenmodell von Perls zeigt auf, welcher Weg begangen werden muss, um die gesellschaftliche Fassade zu überwinden und zu unserem authentischen Kern zu gelangen.
